Our pergola frames are built from correctly sized structural timber — typically treated pine, Balau or SA Pine H3 — with all metal connectors hot-dip galvanised or stainless steel. We apply weatherproof sealants or stains to all exposed surfaces as standard.

Do I need council approval for a pergola in KZN?
It depends on the size and your municipality's rules. Pergolas under 15 m² typically don't require plans in most KZN municipalities, but we always advise checking with your local council. For larger structures or HOA estates, we can assist with drawings.
How long does a timber pergola last in KZN?
A correctly built and maintained SA Pine pergola will last 15–20 years. A Balau or Garapa pergola will last 25–35 years. The key is correct timber specification, galvanised hardware and regular re-sealing every 2–3 years.
Can a pergola be covered with shade cloth or a roof?
Yes. Many clients add a shade cloth, polycarbonate sheeting or IBR roofing over the pergola frame. We can design the structure to carry the additional load from the start, or assess whether an existing pergola can take the addition.
What is the difference between a pergola and a carport?
A pergola is primarily a decorative or shade structure, typically with open or spaced rafters. A carport is designed specifically to shelter vehicles and is built with a solid or covered roof and wider-span beams. FPS Woodworks builds both.
