FPS Woodworks brings the same precision to balustrade installation that we apply to every project — tight joints, properly spaced balusters and rails that sit plumb and true.
We work with a range of timber and composite materials depending on your location, budget and aesthetic. For coastal properties in Umhlanga, Ballito or Salt Rock, we recommend stainless-steel fixings and naturally durable hardwoods like Balau or Garapa. For inland areas — Hillcrest, Kloof, Pietermaritzburg — treated pine offers an excellent balance of cost and performance.
All balustrades installed by FPS Woodworks are built to comply with SANS 10400 structural requirements: minimum 1 000 mm height on elevated decks, baluster spacing that prevents a 100 mm sphere from passing through, and fixings rated for the appropriate load.

Common Questions
How high must a deck balustrade be in South Africa?
SANS 10400 requires balustrades to be at least 1 000 mm high on decks more than 1 000 mm above ground level. FPS Woodworks builds all balustrades to code.
What is the maximum gap allowed between balusters?
Building regulations require that a 100 mm sphere cannot pass between balusters. We space balusters at 90–95 mm to ensure compliance.
Can you retrofit a balustrade onto an existing deck?
Yes. We assess the existing deck frame, add blocking where needed, and bolt the balustrade posts directly into the frame — no need to rebuild the whole deck.
Which timber lasts longest for balustrades near the coast?
Balau is our top recommendation for coastal KZN — it is naturally toxic to termites, extremely dense and handles salt air better than most timbers. Garapa and Massaranduba are also excellent choices.
